In a climate filled with sadness and horror, some beautiful and uplifting news has broken through – Elizabeth Gilbert has married her partner Rayya Elias.
Sharing the news via Facebook on Tuesday evening, the Big Magic author wrote, “Over the last year, Rayya Elias and I have been through some really difficult days together — but not today. Today was precious and perfect. A simple and spontaneous ceremony of love, surrounded by a handful of friends and family.”
Gilbert's post continues, "Our ceremony was nothing legally binding (no need to alert the authorities, folks!)...just a quiet and private celebration of what we have long known to be true: We belong to each other."
In September last year, months after Elias was diagnosed with pancreatic and lung cancer, 47-year-old Gilbert announced that the pair's 15 years of friendship had become a romantic one, telling her fans, "I love her and she loves me."
Elias, who is also an author, continues to fight her cancer, something Gilbert noted in her Tuesday post.
"More difficult days are to come. It doesn't get easier from here. Rayya's illness is grave. But our love is strong. We will walk together as far as we can go together. After that, it all gets turned over to God."
She ended, "Create beauty with every day you are given."
