Rape victims quote their attackers. Words scarily similar to Blurred Lines

TRIGGER WARNING: This post may be distressing for surviviors of sexual assault.

This is Project Unbreakable.

Created in 2011 by then 19-year-old Grace Brown, the project is best described by Grace herself:

I began by photographing survivors of sexual assault, holding a poster with a quote from their attacker. I simply started by photographing people that I knew, and at that point, I had no idea how powerful this project could be.

I began receiving hundreds of emails thanking me for what I was doing. Survivors were contacting me, asking me to photograph them, and submitting their own images if they lived too far away. And I realised that I have the ability to make a huge difference in a world where sexual abuse is shamed and kept quiet.

People were finally letting go and taking the power back from words that were once used against them.

The project has gained considerable publicity recently because people have noticed that many of the quotes by sexual attackers are disturbingly similar to lyrics from Robin Thicke’s popular song, Blurred Lines.

Take a look at some of the comparisons highlighted by writer Sezin Koehler:

When placed together, the images are incredibly disturbing. But hopefully the comparisons to the ‘definitely-not-about-rape’ song Blurred Lines will only lead to more attention for Project Unbreakable, which has become an important online space for many survivors of sexual assault.
