Melbourne tenant's coin-operated toilet has commenters suspicious.

An apartment tenant in Thornbury, Melbourne has publicly shamed their landlord for installing a coin-operated toilet, which requires tenants to pay one dollar for every flush.

The Reddit thread “Is it legal for my landlord to have installed a dollar coin operated flusher on my toilet?” starts like this:

“I understand in our laundry having to pay for the communal washing machine,” the post reads. “But I pay the water bill that goes into my apartment. I can’t work out if I’m being duped?”

The tenant was reportedly told by the landlord that the coin-to-flush mechanism is a “government incentive to save water”.

“But then why does he get to collect the money?” the Redditor asks.

Initially, the public response was one of suspicion. Members of the forum were not convinced that the post wasn’t a hoax. They were asking for photographs and more detail.

A photograph was posted, simply captioned: “My landlord’s way of making a profit of my use of the toilet I already pay rent for.”

The photograph posted alongside the thread. Image via Imgur, through Reddit.

And more details followed:

"I rent privately. Not through an agency," the post reads. "I called the rental legal advice place and they said come in. There were so many people in there and I didn't get seen. The worst thing is not having any dollar coins on hand. Especially when I have guests over. It's really embarrassing and gross for them."

Since then, the responses have been more helpful:

"I work for Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV), specifically investigating this exact sort of thing," Bulknowt wrote. "I highly suggest you contact CAV and possibly make a complaint. I don't offer legal advice off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure that isn't legal."

"Having a toilet that doesn't flush makes the house unfit for habitation," PoglaTheGrate added. "This guy is ripping you off in a most heinous way. NO."

And also practical...

"Until you get this sorted, consider flushing with a bucket. Works just as well," from F**kwpshit.

And this, from Pitchnroll: "Maybe a half flush is only 50c?"

While some users are still dubious:

"I doubt this is a product you could buy, said Waltonics.

"They don't exist," Sammy1406 wrote.

And, from OIP: "I'm trying to work out how it would even mechanically operate?"

Coin-operated toilets that may or may-not-be real, as well as legal advice and plumbing advice over Reddit, welcome to 2017.
