Stacey from Veggie Mama
Tell Mamamia readers about your blog. What do your write about? Why should they read?
My blog is where I share bits about my life, vegetarian recipes and my journey into being more eco-friendly. The problem is the only thing I seem to be able to grow in my own backyard are my two kids.
What motivated you to start your blog? How long have you been blogging for?
I started my blog just over three years ago, when I was a newspaper editor trying to break into an online writing career. I thought it would serve as a portfolio of sorts. I found it was way more fun to write in my own voice about topics I chose, and I haven’t been able to stop since.
Do you blog full time or as a hobby? How do you balance the the commitments?
I blog full time now, balanced with being a mostly stay-at-home mama and teaching media law and journalism at university. How doI balance the three? Um… I don’t. My kids are still very little (they are two and seven months) it’s a bit of a ridiculous juggle at times. Which means my bathroom is filthy and I’ve got a memory like a sieve.
What is the biggest lesson blogging has taught you about yourself?
That I needed a community of other parents more than I thought I did.
What was your first job?
I washed dishes at Eagle Boys Pizza. I wasn’t friendly enough to work the front counter, apparently.
Is what you are doing now remotely like what your 16 year old self thought you would be? How has your career impacted on where you are now?
Goodness no! Back then I thought computers were for playing Wolfenstein 3D and making posters from clipart. At 16 I was way more interested in wagging school and smoking cigarettes at the bus stop. My microsecond career in journalism helped me realised I wanted to write… anything other than news.
What lesson did you learn the hard way?
That no man is an island.
Who inspires you?
How does social networking help you? What social networks do you use?
Social networking keeps me connected to people, ideas and inspiration. Not a day goes by I don’t learn something new from someone or something. Or see a cat meme. I use Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.
Everyone has a favourite though, what is your favourite social network?
Instagram, fo sho. Although it used to be Twitter.
What are the tools of your trade? What helps you get your job done? (Platforms, Apps etc)
My desktop Mac, iPhone and iPad. I organise myself with Cozi, an organising app. And a hundred million phone reminders.
Life balance is important. Do you take time-out from online are always connected?
I have just pulled back from being always online. My kids are too little at this point. But I thrive on learning and the Internet feeds my insatiable appetite. So many things to see and do and read… but I email it to myself to enjoy later when the kids are busy or asleep.
What is your favourite item of clothing and why?
My Converse sneakers. They dress down any outfit, which is much more my style.
What’s your personal motto?
Live and let live.
What is your favourite flavour of icecream?
What is the first thing you bought with your first proper pay cheque?
Um, a candelabra and a fake chenille sweater. It was 1996, after all!
If we looked in your handbag right now, what would we find?
If you were a super hero what would your power be?
Mind control. That’s not a five dollar note, it’s a fifty…
