Chelsea Clinton welcomes a beautiful baby.

It’s a girl for the Clinton family.

The rumours that Former US President Bill Clinton slipped he was going to have a grandson, were wrong.

Bill Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton, 34, and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, welcomed a baby girl four days before the expected due date.

Chelsea took to Twitter to announce the little arrival, including the baby’s name, to her 625,000 followers.

The baby is the first for the happy couple, and the first grandchild of Bill and Hillary, who have gushed non-stop about their excitement at becoming grandparents.

Shortly after, Chelsea, Bill and Hillary shared the first photos of Charlotte via their Twitter accounts.

Chelsea was last seen on Wednesday at the annual Clinton Global Initiative summit in New York.

Chelsea told CNN that she didn't want to know the gender of her baby, "There are so few mysteries in life…any answer is a happy one. So my husband and I decided that we would enjoy this mystery for the nine-plus months that we're granted, and we are eager to find out what God will have given us."

As for the name, Charlotte means freedom and, according to the Daily Mail, is a favourite among royals and political dynasties. Last year, it was the 11th most popular girl's name in the US.

Marc and Chelsea were married in July 2010 and announced they were expecting a baby in April this year - which was at the same time as Chelsea resigned as a specialist reported for NBC.

Now, all eyes are on Hillary who once said she wouldn't run for presidency until she had grandchildren.

Congratulations to the happy couple.
