weddings

The celebrity wedding trend we can't see catching on anytime soon.

The phrase ‘two are better than one’ can be applied to lots of things in life. Like slices of cake. Or puppies. Or, well, shoes.

But two wedding ceremonies? That just sounds like a lot of effort, not to mention $$$.

However, the double wedding appears to be something of a trend in Hollywood – and the latest star to jump on the bandwagon is Gossip Girl‘s Penn Badgley.

You might recall seeing reports in February that the actor had wed his partner Domino Kirke (yes, the sister of Girls star Jemima). The Manhattan courthouse ceremony was attended by friends and family and was, by all accounts, a lovely event:

Thought that was the end of that, didn’t you? WRONG.

According to People, the newlyweds tied the knot again over the weekend in an outdoor ceremony attended by celebrities including Debra Messing and Mariska Hargitay.

“You only get married twice, once,” Kirke wrote on Instagram. That’s probably true.

Happiest of wedding parties for the lovely couple.

A duel-ceremony wedding might sound a bit out-there, but Badgley and Kirke aren’t the first celebrity couple to do it.

Keira Knightley and musician James Righton married at a town hall in the south of France back in 2013.

About a year later, the actress revealed to Elle magazine that, in fact, there had been a second “secret” wedding that was just for friends of the couple.

Knightley didn’t give much else away, but she said the ceremony took place “in a wood” and she wore a Valentino dress.

In 2014, James Blunt and Sophia Wellesley also did the double wedding dance. Reportedly, the couple tied the knot in a London registry office, and chased this up with a secret religious ceremony in Majorca.

However, perhaps the most compelling evidence in support of the double wedding comes from George and Amal Clooney.

The actor and the human rights lawyer exchanged their vows in front of family and friends in a "private symbolic ceremony" in Venice, before formalising their union in a subsequent civil ceremony at the local city hall.

Obviously, each of these couples had their reasons for saying 'I do' twice, but we just can't see it becoming a mainstream trend. Organising one wedding ceremony can be emotionally and financially draining enough.

Then again, who wouldn't want a second wedding cake?

Would you have two wedding ceremonies? Have you?
