Does this multi-award winning artist need even an introduction?

If you were alive in 2011, it’s highly likely you’ve heard Adele’s music or found yourself singing along to Rolling in the Deep – albeit probably not like the vocal powerhouse herself.

Aside from her incredible voice and the power ballads she can knock out, she’s loved by the public for being a down-to-earth singer who doesn’t give a toss about her weight or what people think of her.

Unlike so many celebrities, Adele has consciously avoided spotlight and much of her personal life remains  a mystery.

She and her partner Simon Konecki welcomed their son on October 19, 2012. She has never spoken in-depth about either of them and is yet to reveal the name of her son.

Adele’s musical talent was first introduced to the public when a friend posted a three-track demo on her MySpace page in 2006. Although this was actually for a school assignment, it was the beginning of her launch to success. She was quickly offered a recording contract and by the following year she had become an award winning artist. Oh alright then, it certified four times platinum in the UK, and went double platinum in the US. No biggie.

Her debut album, 19, was named after her age when she wrote most of the songs. She’s also joked that it was really named after her weight in stones – chalking up yet another reason why we love her self-deprecating ways.

Often criticised about her weight, she once said, “I would only lose weight if it affected my health or sex life”.

Adele’s lyrics are incredibly deep and personal and prove to be the only window into her life that we the public have access to. Her writing is painfully honest, for example her song Daydreamer was written about her bi-sexual ex-boyfriend who ran away with another man?

She released her second album, 21, in early 2011. Amazingly, this album blew her last one out of the water, earning her six Grammy Awards, Album of the Year and the title of the most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in one night. The album continued to win a string of prestigious awards and held the top position longer than ANY other album since 1985 in the US, selling over 26 MILLION copies worldwide. By February, she had two top-5 tracks and two top-5 albums, becoming the first artist to beat the Beatles’ 1964 milestone.

It’s fair to say Adele has won more awards than you’ve eaten hot dinners, but among those are a few outstanding achievements. She’s been placed in VH1’s Top 100 Greatest Women in Music, has had numerous mentions in the Guinness World Records, won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and has been named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Um, did we mention she’s still only 24?

Below is a clip of Adele answering questions from the press after recently performing her song “Skyfall” at the Academy Awards and taking home the Oscar for Best Original Song. It’s a rare and insightful glance at her warmth, humour and modesty.
