Truck driver illegally dumps 2t of asbestos outside Sydney childcare centres

CCTV footage released today shows a truck illegally dumping asbestos outside two Sydney childcare centres.

Cameras in the inner-city suburb of Ultimo captured the truck passing through Wattle Lane on December 14 last year.

The white Daihatsu Delta is shown with its tipping tray up and rear tray gate open, spilling over two tonnes of asbestos as it passes over a pair of speed bumps. The vehicle's number plate appears to be deliberately hidden under a piece of cloth.

The dumping occurred two metres away from the KU Wattle Lane Children's Centre and the Magic Pudding, and two blocks from the city's waste management depot.

The area was sealed off quickly after a passer-by noticed the spillage and sounded the alarm. Toxic waste specialists then removed the asbestos over a two-day, $13,000 operation.

The City of Sydney Council released the footage earlier today and have appealed for any public information that could aid in identifying the vehicle. The Council believes the dumping was not an accident. Can you help?
