6 "non-traditional" jobs that women totally nail.

Let’s be honest. Women are great at what they do. We’re often better suited, and better equipped, to handle some job roles that are not considered ‘traditional’ – and there’s a really simple reason why.

It’s all in our chemistry. The part of the brain that connects the left and right is bigger in women. That makes us excellent multi-taskers and thinkers, and it leaves us better equipped to handle jobs that are normally outside our consideration…

All I’ll say is thank goodness more and more women are taking on roles that empower and show us we don’t have to be pigeonholed into traditional job roles for women. There’s nothing wrong with devoting yourself to your family; it’s a full-time job in itself and often forgotten along the way. The point I’m trying to make is that the world is our oyster – and here’s why.

Think about it. There are just some jobs that we’re better equipped to do. Here are six jobs that we, as the multi-taskers and thinkers, are better at for very specific reasons:

1. Chef/Cook.

I’ve done a lot of research into chefs and cooks by watching My Kitchen Rules, Masterchef and every Top Chef series that has ever aired. You could say I’m obsessed with cooking shows, because I’m obsessed with food. And this, as far as I’m concerned, makes me an expert on chefs and cooks.

Women are much better at being chefs and cooks because we know how to release our emotions through tears, we are brilliant multi-taskers and can cook a meal while planning a family holiday, for example.

I also always love how female chefs and cooks favour recipes that have been handed down the generations in their family. We respect the history of dishes such as lasagne and chocolate chip cookies. We might sometimes add a fancy sauce or a sugar glaze but by gosh, we will follow Grandma’s recipe if it kills us, because it is the best and we are not afraid to admit it.

2. Truck driver.

My brother is a truck driver and makes really good money doing it, but he doesn’t seem to enjoy it much. Women make much better truck drivers because the thought of driving, on our own, with sole control of the radio/windows/air conditioner is a dream we aspire to achieve from a very young age.

Being in charge of operating a heavy vehicle not only sounds like heaps of fun to me, but it also gives you a sense of ultimate control which for women, who are much more inclined to draw inspiration from metaphors, means you can open up to the idea of your career influencing the rest of your life. You are operating a truck, for crying out loud. You are in control. You can certainly control the rest of your life then.

You’re an achiever!

3. Financial advisor.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve argued with my financial advisor about money. He just doesn’t get it. His focus is on accumulating and increasing and building and investing. Mine is on financial freedom, which is a completely different thing as far as I am concerned.

I don’t want to own the world, I just want to own my world, and all that means to me is making enough money to be financially secure but also, to enjoy that financial security. Otherwise, what is the point?

4. Engineer.

I don’t actually know what engineers do exactly but I know it has to do with considering the structure of things. Whether it be buildings or roads, you want a woman doing this job because we consider all of the consequences. We’re nothing if not perfectionists and the tiniest of details won’t slip through the cracks. It’s all about attention to detail and we have that in abundance.

5. Technical trades.

This includes roles in telecommunications and aviation, from organising connectivity in workplaces to fitting out engines on planes – and boy can women nail these roles.

Being able to talk to anyone we want at any moment that we want is always important to a woman. At least to this woman.

Not once in my life have I ever felt the need to take a break from my phone. A break from my phone? I’d have a nervous breakdown.

Keep that communication up people. It makes you an excellent employee.

6. Company bosses.

The best bosses I have ever had are women because they are tough – not for the sake of being tough, but they are also incredibly fair.

I’ve found that female bosses have more of an understanding and acceptance of how our work lives and personal lives intertwine and while they expect excellence in the workplace, if your parents or kids are sick they’ll send you home immediately, and expect more brilliant work upon your return.

So ladies, go for it when it comes to choosing that dream job. Don’t think about it or worry ‘will I be good at that?’, or think negative thoughts. There’s no such thing as can’t. Just go for it. Because you can do it all.
