Boost Juice founder, Janine Allis, shares exactly HOW she does it

Welcome to our brand new series THIS is how she does it. Each week we'll feature a prominent Aussie mum and take you through her day.

We can't think of a better way to launch the series than with the amazing Janine Allis, mother of four and founder of BOOST Juice.

JANINE ALLIS

WAKE UP

I wake up about 6.30am with my daughter running into me for a morning cuddle. She then sends her daddy off to get her warm milk (she has him wrapped around her little finger).  I have a shower to wake up as I am not a morning person.  My husband Jeff normally brings me a tea (yes, I will keep him) to assist me in the waking up process.   The next hour is getting the kids dressed and ready for school. I make a juice for us both – mine is apple, ginger, carrot and celery. Jeff’s is the same but with beetroot. We then go for a morning walk to take our 4 year old to kinder, then I am off to my regular yoga session, and then to work.

I tend to wear nothing to bed as I find clothing restricting and I find it hard to sleep; maybe this is why my husband is so nice to me in the morning!  I do love my bed.

BREAKFAST

Every day I have a juice, (I promise I do, I am not just saying it). I also love a coffee in the morning. I often have a smoothie in the morning. I add ingredients like liquid iron, LSA (Linseed, Soy and Almond), chai or flaxseed oil. If for some reason I miss the smoothie I really feel lacking in clarity and energy. On weekends, we do our normal walk but we stop at our local café for a breakfast, with a newspaper. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day.

BATH vs SHOWER

I love my shower in the morning; all my best ideas come in the shower. I love a long hot one.  Often my daughter will join me. About once a week I will have a bath in the evening. I set up candles, and often with my favourite book.  Mostly this happens in winter on a cold day. I love being warm.

GETTING DRESSED

Every morning I wear my yoga gear, so my work gear is based around my yoga outfit. So in winter I wear boots over my yoga tights nearly every day. I find if you dress for exercise you are more likely to do it. I always dress for comfort.

WORK

There is no such thing as a typical day for me. I often work from home; I find I am more productive than when I am in the office. If I do go into the office, it’s usually around 11am.

My office is not that tidy, but I do love systems so it is organised chaos.

I often forget lunch, but we are lucky in the office that we have all the ingredients for smoothies. I do like a café latte, but it has to be made well.

I think great purpose and joy comes from learning and solving the myriad of problems that a business delivers. The sole reason I am in a position to go to yoga in the morning and work from home, is the amazing executives we have in the business. We only want the best people working for us. By getting the best, then giving them room to thrive, allows me to have the flexibility to do what I want to do, instead of need to do.

WORK LIFE VS HOME LIFE

I never used to switch off, I was manic.  Now I am older and have great people in the business we have I can now switch off at night and be a better mother, person and wife.  I love the working environment.  When you are surrounded by smart and driven executives it is exciting to work with these people.

EXERCISE

My main form of exercise is yoga. I have never been as strong, fit or toned than I am now. The style is Ashtanga Yoga, which is one of the forms directly from India. What I am enjoying is the spiritual side of yoga, not just the exercise. I am a better person because of yoga (not sure everyone would agree). I try to practice 5-6 times per week.

CHILDREN AND WORK

The children have never known anything but us being involved in Boost. They take it in their stride. They get asked “do you get a free Boost” all the time. They give me a hard time or tease me if I am featured in media reports.

I want the children to forge their own careers in whatever they want. My 14-year-old wants to be a world leader and a reiki master, so we will see how that goes.

EVENINGS

We used to do ‘Taste me Tuesdays’ – every Tuesday we go out for dinner and try a different cuisine, then discuss that country. School sport has got in the way now.  We try to eat dinner together but it doesn’t always work out. The kids like quite plain food, meat and veggies being their main diet. They love a good soft taco dinner, or a spag bolognaise. I often get those pre-made meals from my local café, as the chef is a better cook than me.

MY VILLAGE

I am one very lucky lady, as my mum is a huge help for me in my life.  She has helped me with all my children while I work. So I have had no guilt, and the odd moment when I say to my mum, “Mum, I do not say thank you enough, and I think I am taking you for granted”. She tells me, “I love it, I would not want it any other way, it is a joy and a pleasure to be involved with you and your children”.  I know, how lucky am I?…

My husband and I are a good team, we share most of the jobs required to manage a family.

BEDTIME

I am quite a late night person.  More emails are sent at night than during the day. Sleep often comes relatively easy, but I do like to read before bed.  I sleep about 7.5 hours a night.

TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS

Organisation is the key, making sure you always catch up once a week (in the evening) with the whole family to ensure everyone knows what everyone is doing for the week.

I diarise everything.  If it is not in my diary, it does not happen. I do so much online, from grocery shopping, to clothes shopping.  I am quite organised, but occasionally things fall through the cracks.
