Best and Worst of the week

We are free range eggs

It’s time to take a look back at your week and identify its high and low points. From the personal to the political, from tragic to trivial, no best or worst is too big, too small or too embarassing to share. There’s certainly a rich array of options if you’re a politician.

Just to re-cap, there is a quick, easy-to-understand Mamamia Cheat-Sheet about Julia Gillard and how she came to be prime minister without an election here. You’ll also find videos of Kevin Rudd’s extremely moving and difficult to watch concession speech here and Julia’s first speech as Prime Minister here.

BEST: Yesterday, for 6 hours, I sat next to my friend, mentor and former boss Lisa

.

Wilkinson on the Today Show set and watched history unfold. The moment Australia’s first female prime minister was sworn into office by Australia’s first female Governor General was spine-tingling and I can think of no other person more significant or appropriate to share that moment with than Lisa. If my Mum had been sitting on my other side, it would have been perfect. Like so many 70s feminists, she always believed it was possible, always told me one day we’d have a female Prime Minister. And regardless of your politics, you have to stop and consider the significance of yesterday for generations of Australian women, past, present and future.

WORST: 6 hours of live TV with no commercial breaks is a long time to hold on when you’re busting to go to the loo. Especially with all the talk of “spills”…….
