3. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says he can’t guarantee when the Coalition’s proposed changes to paid parental leave would be introduced should his party win the September election. Speaking to the ABC’s Leigh Sales last night he said: “We can’t finalise the timings of these initiatives until we’ve seen the pre-election fiscal outlook and I fear that that will be much worse than the Government is currently letting on… My hope is that we’re able to introduce a paid parental leave at the same time as we have an offsetting of the company tax cut.”

5. Footage of a 14-year-old McDonald’s burger that looks almost identical to what it did on the day it was purchased has gone viral in the US. Utah man David Whipple said he bought the burger in 1999 and planned to keep it for a month to see what happened. But David forgot about the hamburger and only found it in a coat pocket recently. He told presenters on TV show The Doctors that he couldn’t understand why the burger hadn’t decomposed in all that time.

Responding to the story, McDonald’s said: “In the example of cooking a McDonald’s hamburger, the patty loses water in the form of steam during the cooking process. The bun, of course, is made out of bread. Toasting it reduces the amount of moisture. This means that after preparation, the hamburger is fairly dry… When left out open in the room, there is further water loss as the humidity within most buildings is around 40 percent. So in the absence of moisture or high humidity, the hamburger simply dries out, rather than rot.”
